Veronika Pausova’s paintings are manifestations of a series of challenges the artist sets up and addresses upon the surface of a canvas in order to evoke short stories within each piece. Her works often begin with a fairly straightforward idea, such as to represent objects or entities at once inside and outside of a particular circumstance. Flies on either side of a window ajar, for example, that are rendered with such precision as to look like photo-collaged elements on the surface of the painting. However the notion of a window and the landscape beyond are completely abstracted into a combination of geometric line drawing in fine brush, and a background motif created by soaking the canvas via paint imbibed sponges, or fabric. Pausova ultimately makes distinctly graphic paintings that are funny and captivating, she offsets her skill with her humour, creating surreal compositions that are uniquely hers.
